Mutual Aid & Solidarity for British Columbians Impacted by Floods
British Columbia's government declared a province-wide state of emergency on Wednesday, November 17th in light of the record-breaking rainfall that has caused major flooding and several mudslides. Hundreds of people across the province have been left stranded and cut off from supplies due to the destruction of several major highways.
The Port of Vancouver is Canada’s largest port and the third largest in North America (moving $550 million of cargo every day), meaning its inaccessibility is causing severe food and supply shortages for the rest of British Columbia and other parts of Canada.
Earlier this year, BC experienced more record-breaking weather when a heatwave killed over 600 people and ignited hundreds of forest fires across the province. Natural disasters like this point to the ineffectiveness of colonial governments and the impact of capitalism on our environment.
In the gaps left by governments, people unite in solidarity to support their peers through direct action and mutual aid.
In mutual-aid systems, people work cooperatively to meet the needs of everyone in the community. It’s different from charity, which features a one-way relationship between an organization and recipients, and often responds to the effects of inequality but not its causes. Mutual aid is an act of solidarity that builds sustained networks between neighbors.
